The Evangelical Lutheran Old Town St. Nicholas Church is the oldest church in the city. The parish here has existed since 1236, and the three-aisled hall church was probably built in the 14th century. The church's patron saint, St. Nicholas of Myra, was first mentioned in a document in 1317. From 1541 onwards, Protestant services were also held here. In 1632, St. Nicholas Church finally became the property of the predominantly Protestant city community. The originally Gothic church building was significantly altered during reconstruction in the 1950s.
