The abbey was founded around 1198 by Augustinian canons who had fled from Jerusalem to escape Saladin. King Hugh I (1195–1218), of the House of Lusignan, donated land to the monastery. After 1206, the abbey adopted the customs of the Premonstratensian canons. The monastery church was also built during this period under King Hugh III (1267–1284).
