In 1119, Waregem was already mentioned as a separate parish. In 1984, the remains of a Romanesque church were uncovered in Tournai stone and grey-green fieldstone. It was a three-aisled basilica cross church, of which some parts have also been preserved in the current church building. In 1189, the right of patronage was ceded to the Chapter of Our Lady of Tournai.

In 1488, during the uprising against Maximilian of Austria, the church was damaged, but part of the church treasures were saved. Before 1500, a new tower was built and the Romanesque south aisle was demolished. A new south aisle was built, just as wide as the central aisle. Between 1797 and 1824, the narrow north aisle was demolished and also replaced by a wide aisle, creating a hall church. Between 1839 and 1843, the church was extended 12 metres to the west.

The church was badly damaged during the First World War and extensively rebuilt in 1923-1924 to a design by Maurice Allaert.

It is a three-aisled hall church with a pseudo-transept and a crossing tower. The central facade is flanked by two stair towers. The church is made of Tournai sandstone and the square crossing tower is made of Balegem stone. The interior is in the classicist style of 1775-1777. The wainscoting with built-in confessionals and the communion bench also date from the 18th century. The painting Descent from the Cross from 1650 by Cornelis de Vos hangs in the church.

Before 1119, Waregem probably had a wooden church building. As soon as the city became part of the diocese of Tournai, a stone, Romanesque church was built. From 1500 onwards, the current church gradually acquired its current Gothic form in various phases: first a widening of the north aisle (early 19th century), then an extension (1838), the protected 58-metre-high tower (1858), the neo-Gothic facade (1868), and so on.

In recent decades, the focus of the deanery church has mainly been on the interior, including the restoration of the large organ with no fewer than 4,380 pipes.

        FACT

A real carillon should eventually be built in the bell tower. There are currently 8 bells hanging there.
