The neo-classical church, named after St. Nicholas, was built between 1830 and 1837 according to the plans of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The spire of the 77-meter high spire towering over the roofs of the city was built from 1843 to 1850.

The Nikolaikirche on the Alter Markt, with its dome visible from all directions, is probably the most striking building in the state capital of Potsdam. After the old Nikolaikirche burned down in 1795, plans were made to rebuild it in 1800. From 1828 it was then rebuilt according to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in cooperation with his students Ludwig Persius and August Stüler. Its floor plan is in the form of a Greek cross, with one arm of the cross extended by a semicircular apse. The portal is supported by columns and is reminiscent of ancient temples. In 1850 the church was consecrated again.

Above the rooftops of the city! 216 steps take you to the viewing platform, where you can walk around the dome of St. Nikolai at a height of 42 meters. The church itself is also worth a visit. It was built in 1830, expanded several times, and then destroyed in the Second World War. Since its re-consecration in 1981, it has been a place of encounters and discoveries.
