The sculpture “Monumento al Espetero” in Málaga honors the tradition of espeto grilling, in which sardines are roasted on wooden skewers over an open fire. The statue depicts an espetero (sardine grill master) at work and was unveiled in November 2009.

The sculptor Jaime Fernández Pimentel created the monument, which is located on the Antonio Machado promenade in the Huelin district. It pays tribute to the fishermen and grill masters who preserve this culinary tradition of Málaga.

The espetero is a traditional coastal craft related to grilling fish on a skewer. In the province of Malaga, Spain, it is practiced in beach bars, picnic areas, and restaurants, right next to the beach. A person places the fish, usually sardines, on a skewer and grills it next to the embers.

On the Antonio Machado promenade, next to La Misericordia beach in Malaga, a monument to this craft, the work of Machú Harras, was inaugurated in June 2006. It joins other monuments representing Malaga's traditional crafts, such as the cenachero, the biznaguero, and the marengo.
