    Ehingen was elevated to town status by the Counts of Berg around 1230 and was granted the right to protect itself with a wall from then on. As early as 1343, the wall surrounding the Upper Town passed a major test: Count Eberhard of Württemberg, the Greiner, laid siege to Ehingen – unsuccessfully. The walls held firm. The battlements built onto the wall were mostly made of half-timbering. It was open on the inside and covered above by a small roof. Narrow loopholes allowed the defenders to fire outwards. Citizens could quickly occupy the battlements via numerous staircases. The defense of the town was the responsibility of the citizens, with the guilds responsible for its organization. Regular archery training with bow and arrow, crossbow, and bolts was mandatory.
