»The Železná hůrka (Eisenbühl) is the smallest volcano in the volcanic landscape of western Bohemia and the northern Upper Palatinate, whose last eruption dates back to around 300,000 years ago. It is barely 20 meters high but recognizable as a complete volcano. Its erupted masses were thrown miles to the north and east. «

A journey back in time to the past. Very interesting for geologists and like-minded people.

It is a cinder cone. During its formation, magma and water reacted in steam explosions. The escaping lava was shattered into volcanic ash, which subsequently formed tuff. The volcano itself is composed of layers of dark gray and brown, as well as black, porous cinders. Between the porous rocks lie completely different blocks with a diameter of over a meter – country rocks that were swept into the volcanic vent and thrown out during the eruption. In the surrounding area, one can find fragments of the cinders as well as nut-shaped, gray-green spheres called lapilli – drops of liquid magma that solidified in the air.
