In 1926, the German and Austrian Alpine Club, Section Eger and Egerland, built a club shelter at 820 meters above sea level, the Tillenschutzhaus, below the Tillenberg summit. The cozy and well furnished hut was a popular hiking destination. The hut had a steward who offered visitors not only refreshments but also overnight accommodation. Ski races and annual mountain festivals increased the level of awareness of the house, and the new access road in 1932 made it easier to visit the shelter. After the end of World War II, the area became part of the border zone, which meant its downfall. In 1947 or 1948 the hut was demolished. The mountain top was then occupied by soldiers for more than 40 years.
