The impressive reception building of Mainz main station was opened in 1884 by the Hessische Ludwigsbahnen (in what was then the largest city in the state of Hesse). The facade is now simplified due to fire and war damage. The longest platform hall in Europe was once located behind the station building. The main station is a lively transport hub with shops and bars.
