It all probably started with a misunderstanding: In 1864, the Württemberg King Wilhelm I commissioned the Royal Building and Garden Directorate and the Royal Forestry Directorate to obtain seeds of the Sequoiadendron giganteum from North America. Only one pound of the seed was ordered, not knowing that the giant tree has the smallest seeds and that 100,000 trees could be grown from 500 grams of seed. The royal forestry directorates began planting the young trees in the Württemberg forests in 1865/66.
