The giant sequoias are 150 years old

October 24, 2014, — Print article Send email

Exactly 150 years ago, on the initiative of the WĂŒrttemberg King Wilhelm I, thousands of giant sequoias were planted in the kingdom at the time. The tiny seeds have long since grown into stately trees, which can also be found in several locations in the Esslingen district. The Esslingen district forestry office has put up large information boards to mark the 150th anniversary of these giant sequoias. They describe the special history of the trees, which are also known as "Wellingtonias". It all probably started with a misunderstanding: In 1864, the WĂŒrttemberg King Wilhelm I commissioned the Royal Building and Garden Directorate and the Royal Forestry Directorate to obtain seeds of the Sequoiadendron giganteum from North America. Only one pound of the seed was ordered, not knowing that the giant tree has the smallest seeds and that 100,000 trees could be grown from 500 grams of seed. The royal forestry directorates began planting the young trees in the WĂŒrttemberg forests in 1865/66. Giant sequoias can be found in the forest districts of Aichtal, Kirchheim, Plochingen, NĂŒrtingen, Plattenhardt and Denkendorf, among others.

It looks impressive, with its mighty size and height. Definitely recommended.
