Several Töddens came from Schapen. These were itinerant merchants and peddlers who developed from Hollandgänger after the Thirty Years' War, reaching their peak in the 18th century. They initially offered their goods in the Netherlands, then in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The Tödden trade brought considerable prosperity to the local communities, as the Tödden houses, with their often elaborately decorated gables, still bear witness today.
