Schale (formerly: Scaldi) was already settled in prehistoric times, as evidenced by several burial mounds and urn finds. In the 9th century, the priest Castus first mentions a donation of abbey-free farms in Schale to Werden Abbey. The Werden Monastery's tax register from 890 names five individuals who had to pay taxes. According to further evidence from 1150, the Werden Oberhof in Schapen also received taxes.
