Rousseau Islands are artificially created islets in lakes, reminiscent of the tomb of Jean Jacques Rousseau
June 21, 2019
Rousseau Islands are small, mostly artificial islands in lakes that are modeled on the former grave of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) on the Île des peupliers (Poplar Island) in the park of Ermenonville near Paris. A circle of poplars or alders was planted on the round islands, surrounding a cenotaph or decorative urn. These mock cemeteries of the Romantic era express the park owners' sympathy with Rousseau's nature-loving and social reform ideas. They were used as a design element primarily in the creation of English landscape gardens. Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rousseau-Insel
