The building of the female Mariinsky Gymnasium attracts with its abundance of turrets, rich decor in Renaissance style, and a reference to Western European castles of the 16th-17th centuries. It was built in the center of Novosobornaya Square in 1899. The gymnasium was supported by the city, zemstvo, Ministry of Public Education, and tuition fees. The seven-grade gymnasium had an eighth, additional, pedagogical class, the completion of which gave the right to receive the title of teacher. The teachers of the overwhelming majority of zemstvo schools in the district and city colleges were graduates of the gymnasium. Girls from various classes were admitted to the gymnasium. In terms of the number of students, the Mariinsky Gymnasium was one of the most significant in the educational district at that time. The gymnasium had a fundamental library with 1,303 titles and a student library with 3,024 titles. The headmistress of the gymnasium from the day of its opening was Vera Porfiryevna Tolpegina, who also taught history and geography (in 1912, in connection with the 30th anniversary of her work at the Borisoglebsk Girls' Gymnasium, the city government petitioned to grant Tolpegina the rights of an honorary citizen of Borisoglebsk). During the First World War, a hospital for the wounded with 5 beds was located in the building of the gymnasium, in the apartment of V.P. Tolpegina. From 25.06.1941 to 15.10.1943, evacuation hospital No. 1392 was located here, where wounded Soviet soldiers were treated, delivered to Borisoglebsk from the areas of military operations from the banks of the Don.
