The gymnasium was founded in 1908 by Serafima Aleksandrovna Tovarova with the active participation of her husband, a physics and natural science teacher at the Borisoglebsk Aleksandrovskaya boys' gymnasium, Konstantin Vasilyevich Tovarov, as a 2nd-category boys' educational institution. It was maintained by the founders, the city council and the district zemstvo. By 1912, the gymnasium was already considered a 1st-category educational institution, and in 1914, with the opening of the 7th grade, it was considered a classical gymnasium with the rights of government educational institutions. It is known that the following taught at the gymnasium: L.V. Sorokin (an outstanding scientist, teacher, one of the founders of exploration geophysics, a pioneer of Soviet marine gravimetry and the head of the first scientific school in this field (the house in which Sorokin lived has been preserved at 100 Leninskaya Street), K.V. Tovarov, D.K. Ivanov, I.A. Shvedov, N.V. Glazunov, G.F. Dolomanova, V.V. Komarov, A.F. Sykora, F.I. Erokhin and others. During the First World War, the teachers and students of the gymnasium took an active part in the public life of the city, organizing charity concerts and performances for the benefit of the wounded. After the victory of the February Revolution, in March-April 1917, the townspeople listened to lectures on current events here. Currently, the building houses the Pension Fund of Russia.
