The building plot for the church was acquired by the Thale steelworks on April 1, 1901, after the Thale parish received a large legacy from Wilhelm Josef Nagel from Erfurt in 1899. Construction of the church began in August 1911, after the first church building on Obersteigerweg could not be completed. The consecration of the Sacred Heart Church followed on June 10, 1913 by Bishop Karl Joseph Schulte from the diocese of Paderborn, to which Thale belonged at the time.

The church building in today's Walther-Rathenau-Straße was built in 1910/11 [1] according to a design by the Paderborn diocesan master builder Arnold Güldenpfennig. On June 10, 1913, the church was inaugurated by Bishop Karl Joseph Schulte from the diocese of Paderborn, to which Thale belonged at the time.
The church, based on the transitional style, has a church hall in the shape of a cross. The massive-looking church building near the Bode is oriented in a north-south direction. The structure is plastered, but the architectural details, which are richly structured, have been emphasized by means of stone work.
