The Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas is a branch church of the Mähringer parish of St. Catherine.
Nearly 800 years ago there was already a first church in this area. Since the year 1183 the village Högelstein was the seat of a provost, whose provost belonged to the monastery Reichenbach am Regen. This was in 1118, 15 years before the founding of the monastery Waldsassen, also by Margrave Diepold III. founded by Vohburg.
In 1442 the monastery Waldsassen bought the provost. The wooden church was already in 1695 a branch church of Mähring.
In its present form, the church was built in 1899, after the chapel was burned down in the same spot in 1894 by a lightning strike.
