The Apollo Varieté (own name: Roncalli's Apollo Variety Theater) is a variety theater on the Rhine promenade in Düsseldorf in the immediate vicinity of the state parliament. Since the opening in 1997, music, theater and variety events have taken place in the event venue, which is managed by Bernhard Paul and operated in the form of an event theater.
With its peculiar building site, Apollo Platz, under the Rheinkniebrücke, the Apollo Varieté creates an urban connection between the old town, the converted harbor and the Rhine promenade. To the outside, the theater building is delimited by a glass cuboid that takes up the width of the bridge. The hall building is inserted into this glass body in the form of a bright red piece of cake. The auditorium is designed so that none of the spectators sits more than 12 meters from the stage. With a movable back wall of the stage, the viewer can be given impressive views of the Rhine front in Düsseldorf.
The theater was built in 1996 to 1997 under the direction of the architects Niklaus Fritschi, Benedikt Stahl and Günter Baum, who had previously planned the adjacent Rhine promenade and were awarded the German Urban Development Prize for the implementation of the overall concept.
