The ‘Arm’ used to flow into the Velpe at the lock. The Arm formed a connecting canal between the Gete and the Velpe and was dug to provide the Binnenmolen or Heilige-Geestmolen, which dates from 1324, with sufficient water. The lock served to regulate the supply of water from the Arm. The grain mill disappeared in the second half of the 18th century. The lock lost its function completely when the mouth of the Arm was moved upstream to its current location at the concrete bridge.
