Typical lost place. Bullfighting was never really as rooted in the Canary Islands as it was in the cities and towns on the mainland. For 300 years, this tradition played no role here. There were neither bulls nor bullfighters on the island. Nevertheless, a big city like Santa Cruz naturally had to have a bullring, because that was very fashionable at the end of the 19th century.
Bullfighting was never really as rooted in the Canary Islands as it was in the cities and towns on the mainland. But then bullfights became fashionable. Bullfights continued for decades, often with great success and events, until interest in them waned in the 1970s. The last bullfight took place on January 6, 1984. In 1991, bullfights were generally banned by the Canary Islands government. The Canary Islands were the first autonomous region in Spain whose animal protection law stipulated this, the second was Catalonia, but not until 2012. Curiously, cockfights were not banned.

Immediately afterwards, the capital's biggest festival moved into the arena: Carnival. The election of the Carnival Queen took place there for the first time in 1985. 5,400 tickets were sold and 2,000 people were able to watch the show from the arena's stands. Then there were boxing matches and concerts, etc. But the building was now suffering from more and more structural defects, 100 years had passed since it opened, and by the end of the 1990s its heyday was finally over. After the closure, it fell into disrepair, and weeds began to spread in the stands.
