The Iglesia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the main church of the city and an outstanding example of Canarian Baroque. It was built on the site where the first Spanish conquerors built a chapel after landing in Tenerife. The church is an important historical and cultural landmark of Santa Cruz.

Architectural features

The church is the only one in the Canary Islands with five naves. It has a basic shape of a Latin cross with side chapels and a transept surmounted by a dome. The main façade features dark basalt stone and traditional Canarian balconies. Particularly striking is the tall tower, completed in 1786 and one of the city's most distinctive landmarks.
