In 1656, the ducal authorities granted three applicants from Tabarz permission to build a sawmill here on the Bromacker "uff Major Butlars Wiese" in return for an annual hereditary rent of 10 fl. They received the necessary water from the small stream that runs through the valley, the Otterbach. Its water could originally be pre-charged in two ponds at the "Knie". The operators built a wooden bridge over the Apfelstädt to provide access to the mill property. In 1686, the Duke bought the property, and as early as 1700, official documents described the mill as "deserted".
