The last scheduled passenger train stopped at Geesthacht station was in 1953.
The 14-kilometer-long railway line between the Hamburg districts of Bergedorf
and Geesthacht, which was also part of Hamburg until 1937, was opened in 1906. In 1952, a train still ran back and forth 13 times a day.
The station's decline began when the Bergedorf-Geesthacht Railway
purchased buses in the 1920s, thus creating competition for itself.
In 1952, the buses on this route carried almost three times as many passengers as the train.
