The origins of the complex date back to the 13th century; today the castle houses the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, which offers fascinating insights into the development of humanity – from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages 🦴🛡️.

Werdringen Moated Castle is located in the Ruhr Valley, in a historically rich landscape at the foot of the Kaisberg mountain, steeped in legend and myth. The romantically situated castle complex is surrounded by a unique nature reserve that stretches along the lake district to the north of Hagen.
Werdringen, a noble residence, was first mentioned in the 13th century. At that time, the present-day moated castle was a fortified castle house or tower castle owned by the Dobbe family of lesser nobility. Werdringen belonged to the feudal dynasty of the Lords of Volmestein. It passed to the Lords of Recke in the 15th century. In the late Middle Ages, it was expanded into a moated castle. The complex experienced another construction phase in the mid-19th century, when parts of the building were added and remodeled in the Neo-Gothic style.
After a turbulent history, the complex became the property of the city of Hagen in 1977. Today, the moated castle is used as a museum and event venue.
