At that time, the king had houses purchased to create space, which also served as a boundary to the castle. The square features a statue of King Christian IX, created in 1909 by the sculptor Hans Peder Pedersen-Dan. Pedersen-Dan is also known for other famous works in Denmark. The square is now a central meeting place. There are shops and restaurants with outdoor terraces. Various events, often with a historical theme, take place here throughout the year, such as the Danehof, an autumn market, or Christmas markets. The tourist information office is also located here.

In 1537, King Chr. III bought a few small houses in the upper part of Nørregade and cleared the area up to Slotsmøllen. This created the square that the king wanted to use as a riding arena and tournament venue.
