The Prince's Chapel was added to the west tower around 1420. Its founder was Margrave Frederick the Quarrelsome, who was granted the Duchy of Saxony in 1423 and thus also received the electoral dignity. The electors and dukes of Saxony were buried in the Wettins' burial chapel until 1539.
