The Albrechtsburg Castle on the castle hill in Meissen is one of the most famous late Gothic architectural monuments and is considered the first palace building in Germany.Starting in 1471, the Wettin Electors and Dukes of Saxony had a residential palace built there on the site of an older medieval castle.In 1710, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory moved in.After 1864, the castle was redesigned again, and numerous rooms were decorated with historical paintings.Today, the hilltop castle is a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention and houses a permanent exhibition on the site's eventful history.

The castle hill was inhabited from the late Bronze Age to the Germanic period. However, no traces of fortifications have been found so far.
