    Historyedit
The Martinspatrozinium and grave finds from the 6th / 7th Century can be founded in Franconian times.
The oldest parts of today's church, which are located on the bottom floor of the tower, date from the Romanesque period. In 1493 the current Gothic, three-aisled and four-aisled hall church with choir and 5/8 choir end was built, which was spanned by ribbed vaults. It replaces a presumably Romanesque hall church. In 1543 the building suffered severe damage in the course of the Jülich feud. Further damage followed in 1690 as part of the predatory wars of Louis XIV. The damage was then repaired. A sacristy was added in the Baroque period. A lightning strike destroyed the tower helmet in 1846, which was probably eight-sided, and replaced it with a simple pyramid roof. The church remained in this form until the Second World War.
From 1904 to 1907, the new parish church of St. Martin was built in the lower part of Langerwehe, since the old church had become too small. The old church thus lost its status as a parish church. In the war years 1944 and 1945 the old church was badly damaged. Almost the entire vault collapsed, destroying most of the interior. The church was rebuilt until 1959, but the vaults were replaced by a simple flat ceiling. The vault is only preserved in the choir. [1]
