WINE FROM THE SOUTHERN FLANK OF THE BEMELERBERG
AUXERROIS, PINOT NOIR & PINOT GRIS
THE TERROIR IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE CLEAR

In 2006, Huub Dullens, pioneer of our vineyard, planted 450 vines. 5 rows of Auxerrois, 3 rows of Pinot Noir and 1 row of Pinot Gris. In 2020, more than 300 vines were planted, of which 200 Pinot Noir, 75 Auxerrois and 50 Pinot Gris.

In 2023, we will plant another 500 vines, bringing the total to approximately 1,250 vines in – almost – equal proportions. With this volume, we let the potential of the Bemelerterroir speak for itself.

There is much to learn, see and feel when growing a grapevine that throws up shoots abundantly in early spring.
Then the real work begins. After ‘laying’, comes hoeing, pruning, tying up, defoliating, pruning, mowing. Terms that previously did not mean much to us in this context but that we now use daily. Caring for the grapevine and the grapes, often with extra hands from family and friends, continues throughout the spring and summer and reaches its apotheosis at the end of September/beginning of October when the grapes are picked with a nurturing hand. These are wonderful days, which we enjoy very much together with family, friends and volunteers.
After a critical inspection of the harvest, the grapes go to the Alexander Battalaan in Maastricht where winemaker Ralph Huydts from Wijngaard Raarberg presses the grapes and takes great care in making the Belle Bemelen that we are so proud of!
