In Herkenrode, a restoration project was carried out in which the aim was to achieve a cultural-historical restoration of the site and nature development.

Water plays an important role in the area. The Demer flows through the domain. The presence of 2 watermills and numerous watercourses, canals and ditches indicate that the water system has always played an important role here.

One of the objectives of the project was the restoration of the watermills: the Tuiltermolen was used for energy production. For the Herkenrodemolen, only a cultural-historical restoration was opted for. Water is also important for the ecological restoration of the area.

A rewetting of the area was desirable in order to achieve the intended nature target types. An important boundary condition was the English park of Herkenrode. An increase in the water level should not harm the health of the park trees.

Fish migration was also made possible during the redevelopment. In addition to free fish migration, a flowing character of the watercourses was also sought in relation to habitat for the desired fish fauna (typical stream fish).
