At the time, the woods belonged to a vast forest called 'Grotenbos'. In the 17th and 18th centuries they were largely in the hands of the Herkenrode Abbey. The area is located on the northern border of humid Haspengouw, on the interfluvium between the Demer in the north and the Herk in the south. It is a landscape-ecologically rich area with relics of the former Herkenrodebos and with a concentration of architectural heritage, in particular remains of half-timbered construction. The core of this area consists of a number of fragmented forest relics, which are now referred to as Herkenrodebos, Zusterkloosterbos and others. These historically stable forests, with a rich spring flora, alternate with grasslands and supplemented with small landscape elements that mainly consist of rows of trees, wooded edges here and there, hawthorn hedges and shrubs.
