Girolamo Maria Francesco Matteo Savonarola (Latin Hieronymus Savonarola; September 21, 1452 in Ferrara; May 23, 1498 in Florence) was an Italian Dominican, preacher of repentance and church reformer. He caused a stir with his increasingly intensified fundamental criticism of the church and was the spiritual leader of the Frateschi party from 1494 to 1498 after the fall of the de facto rule of the Medici in the Republic of Florence. In this role, Savonarola defended broad political participation against the aspirations of the oligarchy and to contain power.
