    History

Armed stronghold of the northern front of the Walls, the Gate with quadrangular tower was already in operation at the beginning of the 16th century, even if its final architectural structure was completed in 1525-1526.

An inveterate historiographical tradition has it that Cesare, the last Duke of Este left this gate in January 1598 before the devolution of Ferrara to the Papal State and that immediately afterwards, in memory of the event, the archway to the north was walled up; this is a legend, since the studies and archaeological excavations carried out in correspondence with the structure suggest that the gate remained practicable at least until the end of the seventeenth century, albeit in alternating phases.

It opens in the Rossetti walls at the end of Corso Ercole I d'Este. Born as a watchtower, it was the ancient access to the ducal hunting estate of Barco, located where the G. Bassani Urban Park is now located.
