It was built from 1909 to 1911, to the design of the famous architect Octave Van Rysselberghe. He tried to reconcile neo-Palladianism with cottage architecture. The building had a progressive construction method, in which a reinforced concrete skeleton was covered with natural stone slabs. The luxury hotel was opened in June 1911. At that time, it had 120 rooms, two elevators and sixteen baths with warm seawater. Members of the Royal family also came here on holiday.
