Breitscheidplatz in Berlin Charlottenburg is to West Berlin what Alexanderplatz is to the east of the city. The square is not only home to the Memorial Church, but also to the Europa Center. The famous Kurfürstendamm, the Berlin Zoo and the KaDeWe are very close by. Before Breitscheidplatz was given its current name, it was first called Gutenbergplatz, later Auguste-Viktoria-Platz. It was only after the Second World War that it was named after the social democrat Rudolf Breitscheid.

The Budapester Straße road tunnel, which separates the square from the Bikini House to the north, was filled in from 2005. The Berlin planning authority ensured a further redesign of the square and the surrounding area, which was completed in spring 2006. The square received new paving, lighting and planting. The Schimmelpfenghaus, which separates the square from Kantstraße, was completely demolished by February 2013.

Since the 2010s, City West, with Breitscheidplatz as its center, has once again become the focus of urban developers and investors. Examples of this are the 119-meter-high Zoofenster on the western edge of the square, which was completed in 2012 and houses the luxury hotel Waldorf Astoria Berlin, and the neighboring - equally high - Upper West, which was completed in 2017.[3] Both towers form a gateway to Kantstraße and frame the Memorial Church in an urban way. On the north side of the square, the Bikini House and the neighboring Zoo Palast cinema were extensively renovated between 2010 and 2014. Further extensive investments are planned in the surrounding area.

It is always oppressive to stand where so many people fell victim to this senseless attack...
