The Hengstey run-of-river power plant was built between 1927 and 1929. In addition to generating energy, it serves to regulate the river, improve the self-purification of the Ruhr and, last but not least, create a high level of recreational value through the dammed Hengsteysee. The three turbines in the power plant generate around 11 million kWh per year, enough for around 3,000 households. The Hengstey run-of-river power plant is part of the Industrial Culture Route.More information: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laufwasserkraftwerk_Hengstey

Hengsteysee - Hengstey run-of-river power plant near Herdecke / Hagen-Boele

The Hengstey run-of-river power plant is a hydropower plant at the end of Lake Hengsteysee in the course of the Ruhr, right on the city boundary between Herdecke and Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia; the power plant building is on the Hagen side.

The run-of-river power plant was realized as a combination system with a roller weir in the 1920s. After construction, the Ruhr water was then dammed up to Hengsteysee. Since then, the river water and the height difference of about 4.6 m have provided the continuous basis for renewable electricity generation.

For hikers, runners and cyclists there is the possibility to cross the Ruhr directly over a pedestrian bridge at the power plant between Herdecke and Hagen. From here you have a great view of the roller weir and the Kaplan turbine houses. As with many bridges, the fashion of the "love locks", which now decorate the bridge, did not stop. Care should be taken for cyclists with the rails in the middle.

Here at the western end of the Hengsteysee the power plant dams up the Ruhr to the Hengsteysee. From here you can see the Koepchenwerk on the north shore well. If you like a longer break, you can stop in the restaurants or have a rustic picnic.

Comfortable bike path that you can ride well with children. There are enough meadows and shore places for picnicking.

Attention, the bridge teeters a little, but is worth crossing because you have a good view of the power plant.
