The Hengstey run-of-river power plant was built between 1927 and 1929. In addition to generating energy, it serves to regulate the river, improve the self-purification of the Ruhr and, last but not least, create a high level of recreational value through the dammed Hengsteysee.

The three turbines in the power plant generate around 11 million kWh per year, enough for around 3,000 households.

The Hengstey run-of-river power plant is part of the Industrial Culture Route.

Here at the western end of the Hengsteysee the power plant dams up the Ruhr to the Hengsteysee. From here you can see the Koepchenwerk on the north shore well. If you like a longer break, you can stop in the restaurants or have a rustic picnic.

Hengsteysee - Hengstey run-of-river power plant near Herdecke / Hagen-Boele

The Hengstey run-of-river power plant is a hydroelectric power station at the end of the Hengsteysee in the course of the Ruhr, exactly at the city boundary between Herdecke and Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia; The power plant building is located on the Hagener side.

The run-of-river power plant was realized as a combination plant with a roller weir in the 1920s. After the construction of the Ruhr water was then dammed to Hengsteysee. Since then, the river water and height difference of approximately 4.6 m have provided the continuous basis for regenerative power generation.

For hikers, runners and cyclists there is the opportunity to cross the Ruhr here directly over a pedestrian bridge at the power plant between Herdecke and Hagen. From here you have a great view of the roller weir and the Kaplan turbine houses. As on many bridges, the fashion of the "love castles" has not stopped, now decorate the bridge. Care is required for cyclists on the central tracks.
