Several historic country estates lie within the inner dune belt near Oostkapelle, one of which is Berkenbosch. This estate was possibly built as early as the 17th century. However, the current main house dates from 1862 and was commissioned by mayor J.G. Sprenger and his wife R.A. Bijleveld.
A park, whose history dates back to the 17th century, surrounds the house. Although the layout has been modified several times since then, centuries-old elements remain. For example, tree-lined avenues and water features recall the formal layout of Berkenbosch in the 17th and 18th centuries. Elements of the landscape style have also been preserved, including winding paths added in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Berkenbosch estate is open to the public.
