The originally parish church was dedicated to Saint Willibrord. The tower is from the late 14th century, while the nave is 15th century. During the Siege of Middelburg (1572-1574) the church was destroyed, although the tower was preserved. In 1582 the remains of the wall blew over. The reconstruction of the nave was completed in 1610 and the choir was demolished and replaced by a flat closure. The church was thus made suitable for Reformed worship. In 1822 the church was renovated and in 1886 a new ceiling (a wooden roof) was installed. From 1954 to 1958 the church was restored, while a new vestry was also built. The feet for the four corner turrets - originally present - were also reconstructed at that time.
