The Marbol, a distortion of Marktborre, is already mentioned in the oldest known city account 1392-1393. The city fountain is the only one of its kind and the oldest in the province of East Flanders and its surroundings. The current fountain is a faithful copy in Balegem sandstone of the original that now stands in an outdoor garden of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwehospital in the Gasthuisstraat. The clear water originally welled up from underground sources under the Oudenberg, a very special water supply for a city fountain.

The Marbol, a corruption of "Marktborre," is already mentioned in the oldest preserved city accounts from 1392-1393. This city fountain is unique and is considered the oldest in East Flanders and the surrounding area. The fountain visible today is an accurate replica in Balegem sandstone of the original, now preserved in the courtyard of the Hospital of Our Lady on Gasthuisstraat. Originally, the clear water came from underground springs beneath the Oudenberg – an exceptional water supply for a city fountain.
