    Vitruvius, a Latin architect and writer of the 1st century BC, described in a chapter of his work "De Architectura" the typical Etruscan-Italic temple building, to whose model the Orvieto temple of Belvedere is correctly adapted. The structure stood on a high podium accessible from a flight of steps on the front side; after an open area delimited by columns you enter the rear, closed part, formed by three cells of which the central one was reserved for the simulacrum of the deity. The main structural elements, made of wood, were later decorated with terracotta, enriched by polychromy; on the roof there could be acroterial statues in terracotta, often of high artistic value. The sacred area in the center of which the 1! temple stood was usually defined by a temenos wall, inside which the rites offered to the deity took place. In the Etruscan cities, the temple was always one of the most important buildings, and as such received all kinds of interest also from the public authorities as well as from private citizens.
