The town hall or Rotovž was built in 1515. It received its current Renaissance form between 1563 and 1565. The town, which dates back to a Markburg or Marchburg first mentioned in 1164 (Mark or March are old German terms for "border"), today has almost 100,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city in Slovenia.
