In 1953, the cave was discovered by the local historian and Bodendenkmalpfleger Felix Gebser after several unsuccessful excavations. From 1957 to 1982 the laborious exposure was carried out in cooperation with the Museum of Prehistory and Prehistory Weimar. There were found campfire remains, shards of pottery, bone tools, animal bones and well-preserved, baked from clay cups.
After the completion of the excavations, the cave was opened in 1994 as a show cave. Helmet-equipped visitors can make the cave 155 meters long.
