The Viehbach rises near the Solingen city motorway L141n (Viebachtal-Strasse) in Solingen. It flows through Solingen for 6.4 km in the direction of the Rhine. In Düsseldorf, near Garath Castle, the Viehbach (which is called Riethrather Bach here) flows into the Garather Mühlenbach. To get there, it has covered a distance of around 13.2 km. From here it is another 7.5 km until it flows into the Rhine together with the Garather Mühlenbach near Urdenbach.
Over the course of five centuries, hammer mills, grinding mills, fruit and oil mills have been established on the Viehbach. Today, it flows quite primitively through the Krüdersheide forest area.
