In 1866, a private field chapel was built in St. Emmeram in Oberföhring by Anton and Katharina Vogel, the then owners of the mill opposite (today the "St. Emmeramsmühle" restaurant, St. Emmeram 41). The founders intended it as a replacement for the St. Emmeram pilgrimage chapel, which was demolished in 1820 and located near the former hermitage and school. A proposal to build a chapel, made by Gottfried Hochleitner, then innkeeper of St. Emmeramsmühle, in 1840, was rejected due to doubts about its religious motives and concerns about pure profiteering.
