    Middle Isar Canal (River), Munich
Project Reason - Ecology, Leisure and Recreation
The section of the river from the Oberföhring weir on the Munich city limits to beyond Moosburg (river kilometers 142.9 to 78.25) is known as the Middle Isar. Until the mid-19th century, the Isar here exhibited all the classic characteristics of a pre-Alpine river, characterized by highly fluctuating discharges and high bedloads. With the construction of the Oberföhring weir in 1924/28, the river was dammed, and up to 150 cubic meters of Isar water per second were diverted into the so-called Middle Isar Canal with five barrages between Munich and Moosburg. Its fate as a canalized river with straight, steep, and heavily reinforced banks seemed to be cemented forever. Not only did the riverbed deepen significantly as a result of the straightening, but groundwater levels and flooding in the floodplain also declined. The constant exchange between the river and the floodplain, as well as the structural connection of tributaries, ceased over time. Numerous weirs and drop structures were built to counteract the deepening. These barriers were well-intentioned, but they prevent fish and small organisms in the riverbed from migrating upstream and downstream. wwa-m.bayern.de/projekte/gek_mittlere_isar/index.htm#:~:text=With%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20weir%20system%20Oberf%C3%B6hring%20in%20the,with%20five%20barrages%20between%20Munich%20and%20Moosburg%20derived.
