The ‘Jigme Dorji National Park‘ is the second largest national park in Bhutan with an area of 4,316 sq.km. The protected area has a high cultural and biological diversity. The region in the northwest of Bhutan was established as a nature reserve in 1974. In 1993 it was upgraded to a national park, although the original area was reduced.
The national park has a wide variety of plant and animal species. The dense forests contain oak, maple, birch, larch and pine, which are increasingly replaced by rhododendrons as the altitude increases. The region is home to endangered animal and plant species such as tigers, snow leopards, Asian wild dogs and the Himalayan musk deer. Herds of blue sheep (Bharal) graze at high altitudes in the vast open landscape.
In the ‘Jigme Dorji National Park‘ you can find all four national symbols of Bhutan. Tree: Cypress (Cupressus corneyana); Flower: Blue poppy (Meconopsis grandis); Bird: Raven (Corvus corax) and Animal: Takin (Budorcas taxicolor whitei).
The national park has been on the Tentative List as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.
