    This statue represents André Ernest Modeste Grétry, an 18th century composer who was born in Liège in 1741 and died in 1813. Grétry is often considered one of the most important composers of French opera of his time and contributed to the development of comic opera (opéra-comique), a popular genre in France during that period.

    The statue of Grétry is placed in front of the Théâtre Royal de Wallonie in Liège, probably because his work had a great influence on opera culture and he is an important figure in Walloon and Belgian music history.
