This large basilica in Maastricht is dedicated to Saint Servatius. Exact biographical data on his person are not known, he is said to have been born in Armenia at the beginning of the 4th century and died around 384 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Probably in 340 he became Bishop of Tongeren.
In popular piety, Servatius is best known as one of the three so-called "ice saints", together with Pankratius and Bonifatius (in some areas supplemented by "Cold Sophie" a day later). The feast day of Saint Servatius in the calendar of saints is May 13th.

The Westwerk is a high closed block between two western towers. Under provost Humbertus, the Basilica of St. Servatius was expanded in the third quarter of the 11th century with a westwork for the kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. In this western work, the Imperial Hall is still a reminder of that relationship. In 1180, Provost Gerard van Are had this westwork enlarged. The walls and towers are mainly built with coal sandstone and marl blocks.

Although Maastricht once boasted many churches and monasteries—most of which, however, no longer exist, at least not in their original function as places of worship—there is one church that has always been the spiritual center of this Dutch town on the Meuse River: Saint Servatius still plays a significant role in spiritual life; the fourth-century bishop buried here continues to shape culture and tradition. This also applies, of course, to his Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Cathedral Treasury, which contains significant treasures.
