The Frontenpark with the fortifications is a city park and nature park on the edge of the center of the Dutch city of Maastricht. The park contains remains of Maastricht's fortifications as well as examples of industrial heritage. Due to the conversion of industrial buildings, the area is also developing into a cultural park.
As early as the 16th century, outside Maastricht's second medieval city wall, there were outdoor structures consisting of earthen ramparts, sometimes with wooden palisades, separated by wet and dry canals. These were mostly temporary in nature and nothing has survived. From the 17th century the fortifications gradually petrified. The area now known as the Line Du Moulin was almost completely renovated from 1772 to 1777 according to plans by Colonel Engineer Carel Diederik du Moulin. This is currently (2019) the best preserved part of Maastricht's fortifications.
At the Cabergerweg, the line from Du Moulin became the Nieuwe Bossche Fronten, a low-lying area characterized by damp canals between the fortifications. This northern part was completely renewed in the years 1816-22 and then bore the name Nieuwe Bossche Fronten. Fort Willem I, which occupies a front position on the Caberg, was also built at this time. Although the interdependence of the high and low fronts and the fort was disrupted by the existing transport infrastructure, the fortifications were preserved in many places.
