The Wallroda Dam is located south of Großröhrsdorf near Radeberg near Dresden. It was only built between 1986 and 1989 and dams the water of the Steinbach, a tributary of the Große Röder.

The dam is divided by a railway embankment on the Kamenz - Pirna line. The railway embankment has a bridge through which the water flows from the fore-dam in the east of the dam to the larger western part.

When the Wallroda Dam was built, it was primarily intended to meet the water needs of agriculture in the Radeberg / Großerkmannsdorf region. The dam also protects against flooding and compensates for low water levels in the Große Röder.

    Tourist information

Its proximity to Dresden makes the Wallroda Dam an increasingly popular destination for stressed-out city dwellers. There is a campsite right by the lake that has already won several awards. However, bathing is only permitted in certain places, as the entire dam and the adjacent forest are located in the Massenei nature reserve. The fore-dam in the eastern part of the dam is also a nature reserve, as various species of dragonflies are native to the reed-covered banks.

Side note: Next to the dam is the Kleinröhrsdorf campsite. It has a 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating from the ADAC and a very good restaurant. Not cheap, but really tasty 😋
